Annysa Johnson is a freelance journalist based in Wisconsin where she spent more than two decades at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
She has worked as a reporter, copy editor and assignment editor, and has covered a broad range of subjects, from local government to legal affairs, k-12 education and religion. She has won awards for feature writing and for coverage of the Catholic Church sex abuse crisis.
Traditionally, a number of Indigenous tribes embraced those who today might identify as LGBTQ or gender-nonconforming as valued members of the community. The Two Spirit movement aims to bridge the past and present.
